 DIY Faux Cupcakes

There are two good ways that I know of to make fake cupcakes.  If you are planning to make a lot of cupcakes, I would use the "Great Stuff" method.  Great Stuff is an expanding foam used by contractors to seal gaps and cracks.  This can be purchased at a hardware store for about $5/can.  You simply fill the cupcake wrappers about 3/4 of the way full with Great Stuff, allow it to expand and dry, and top with "frosting".  The drawback of "Great Stuff" is that the can can only be used once before it seals itself up.  In other words, unless you are making A LOT of cupcakes, you will be wasting most of the can.

The second way, which I will show you here, is great if you only want to make 12 cupcakes.

Drywall Joint Compound (approx 1/2 gal per cake.  1 gal = $7.50, 5 gal = $12.99)

Gal. size ziplock bags

Half it

Cut the floral ball in half.

Slice it

Slice the edges of the half-ball so the shape will fit in the cupcake wrapper.

It should fit like this! Boop! :)

Fit it

You can either paint directly on the styrofoam (may require multiple coats) or slather it with joint compound and then paint it.  I slathered mine.  Paint them chocolately, vanillay, or strawberryey.

Cover it

Mix your icing

 Cheap Icing bag

Don't waste your money on craft store icing bags.  Simply cut a hole in the corner of a ziplock (gal size) bag and drop your decorating tip in.  Secure with tape.  (you can also make one out of wax paper).

Mix joint compound and paint.  You can also add a little flour or water to stiffen runny compound or mix dry compound.  Make sure your compound is fairly stiff for cupcakes though.

Allow at least 24-48 hours to dry.  Once cupcakes are dry, glue them into their cupcake wrappers.  For fancy wrappers, double the wrapper, turning the interior wrapper inside-out.

Glue

Frost cupcakes and add embellishments if desired.  Make sure to support your embellishments until the frosting hardens!

Frost and add

Bon Appetit!

And you're done!

Fill the open spaces with Hot Glue and paint the back with orange, yellow, or green paint.

Painting the back will give the fruit a stained glass appearance.

Form the outline of the peel and the whites of the Orange/Lemon/Lime out of colored clay.

Leave open space for the fruity citrus part, as if you were creating a window frame.

Clay Citrus Slices

Once the paint has dried, you should have a cute fake version of a citrus slice!  Insert into a fake cupcake for a fun, fruity, fake food!
